The Passing of a Legend...In Memoriam: Daddy the Pit Bull

Cesar Millan, all his family and friends, his staff and volunteers, and dog lovers all around the world today will mourn the passing of one of the most loyal, trusting, well-balanced, and influential pit bull ambassadors the world has ever known. Daddy, Cesar’s longtime friend and partner in canine rehabilitation, died peacefully surrounded by family on Friday the 19th of February. He was sixteen years old.

He lived each day of those sixteen years happy and fulfilled as Cesar’s right-hand-“man,” helping to shape the behavior of entire generations of dogs by showing them the way to balance. He stood as champion for calm-submissive pit bulls everywhere, and was instrumental in helping to repair their image as violent, savage, uncontrollable beasts. He successfully battled cancer and weathered chemotherapy, and even got the opportunity to present at the 56th Annual Creative Arts Emmy Awards!

His name is now added to that honorable roster of dogs gone by whose influence is still felt today, and which includes some of Cesar’s beloved childhood heroes: "Rin-Tin-Tin." "Lassie." … "Daddy."

He has been immortalized by Dog Whisperer fans in all mediums, from painting, to photographs, to charcoal drawings and papier-mâché sculpture. And, of course, he lives on in his work, reflected in the balance and calm-submission of his protégé Junior, the countless animals to whom he was a positive role model, and in the hearts and minds of everyone who knew him as a calm, sweet, and mellow example of a widely misunderstood breed.

We All Knew It! Vick is still Lying! USDA releases confidential Vick documents

This story was reported on the "OHMIDOG!" Blog tonight. Finally it's out...We all knew it, but still Vick will not accept ANY responsiblity for his cruelty. He still side steps the fact that he KILLED Dogs & Enjoyed It! Here's the proof that I'm sure he did not want made public.

The United States Department of Agriculture, in response to a Freedom of Information Act request, released hundreds of pages of new evidence last week from its investigation of NFL quarterback Michael Vick to Atlanta’s WSBTV.

The documents include summaries of interrogations by federal investigators with member of Vick’s dogfighting ring and confidential informants in the case.

Among the revelations:

• A confidential informant told investigators that Vick drowned dogs, shot them to death and killed others “with a shovel.”

• A Delta Airlines employee from Virginia was fired “when he attempted to get Vick around security” during the peak of the dog fighting operation. Vick “felt responsible” and went on to hire the employee.

• In 2003, Vick and two other men attended a dog fight in Blackstone, Va., bringing with them two pit bulls. Both lost so the dogs were left with the owner of the property. Vick did not keep dogs that lost matches.

• In April 2007, Vick tested several dogs to determine if they had the predisposition to fight. He ordered six or eight dogs destroyed because they did not meet his standards. The witness said Vick personally helped drown three or four dogs, a process that took two people to hold the animal’s legs while the dog’s head was held under water. Vick also hung dogs.

• The witness told investigators Vick “seemed to get an ‘adrenaline high’ when killing the dogs.”

Vick served nearly two years in federal prison after pleading guilty to a federal animal fighting charge. He was released in 2009 and joined the Philadelphia Eagles.

WSBTV.COM submitted the request for the records in March 2008. The information was delivered by the USDA last week.

Shame on Michael Vick for his lies & Shame on the HSUS for their involvement in his so called "rehabilitation". Vick tried to kill the dogs by his own hands & the HSUS fought hard to have ALL the dogs killed after they were confiscated in the raid on Vicks property. Now they stand hand in hand...making millions & smiling all the way to the bank. Support the folks who actually helped save these dogs & fight for them still. BadRap, the ASPCA, Best Friends, Our Pack Inc, Brandon Bond, and many others who had a real hand in saving these dogs, who are now much loved Family Pets & Certified Therapy Dogs. Kudos to these folks!

We just had our Electric restored today, after several days with out power. A heavy snow fell here in the mountains & wreaked havoc on our trees, power poles & lines. I am a modern gal & love the luxuries that electricity provides! (lights, heat & hot water!) Thanks to all the linemen who worked in horrid weather to get us back to sweet electrical bliss.

Grandson Wyatt went with us to the Bush Bros Christmas Celebration for the kids & grandkids of their employees.

He met the Company Macsot "Beanman" who was decked out for the holidays...

He posed for a pic with "Pop-Pop" on the Famous Flying Pig featured in one of Bush Bros many commercials that also starred Duke & Jay.

Then he visited with Santa while Duke sat nearby.

We ran up to Historic Jonesboro this past Saturday, just to do a bit of shopping & landed right in the middle of their Fall Story Telling Festival & town was PACKED! The decorations were beautiful. Fall Scarecrows, colorful mums & pumpkins were on every store step & street corner.

Dogs will dine when Vick is sacked
"Main Line Animal Rescue placed an ad in today’s Washington Post, pledging five bags of dog food to Washington D.C. animal shelters for each time Michael Vick is sacked.

The rescue, located outside of Philadelphia, said the ad is aimed at bringing attention back to the needs of dogs.

Each time the Eagles new backup quarterback is tackled during the Oct. 26 away game against the Washington Redskins, five bags of dog food will be donated to a D.C. animal shelter.

It also encourages people to volunteer at a shelter on game day.

Vick served 18 months in prison for funding a dog-fighting operation. The Eagles, in signing Vick to a two-year deal, said he’d served his time and deserved a second chance.

“I think we’re all getting tired of the ‘Does he deserve a second chance?’ kind of thing,” said Bill Smith, founder and CEO of the shelter, which is near Valley Forge. “… Maybe it’s about time that the million pit bulls euthanized every year got their second chance.”

“It’s such a misunderstood breed. … They’re great dogs,” Smith told the Philadelphia Inquirer, adding that the stigma pit bulls carry is ”because of people like Michael Vick.”

The ad’s aim is to bring attention back to the needs of dogs, he said. “I think we just need to raise public awareness and this is a good way to do that.”

The ad may run in other cities where the Eagles play, including San Diego, Chicago and New York, he said.

Smith said that if Vick had “any sense of humor at all,” and really wanted to help dogs, he could stand on the field before the Oct. 26 game and let players tackle him, so even more dogs will get fed.

Given Vicks public statements that he wants to help the dogs he once tortured and killed, “He should thank us” for the opportunity, Smith said."

Kudos to the Fabulous Folks at Main Line Animal Rescue! Let's hope that they get to donate 100's of bags of kibble to the DC Shelter. Goooooooo Redskins! Sack Vick!

Back from Vacation & I have Pictures!

We went on our annual Helen, Ga trip this weekend, but we went down a day earlier than the big bike group so we could check out more of the area sites. Boy are we glad that we did!

We stopped by a few Antique Shops. This one was in Helen & the shop & gardens were just lovely!

One was named "Good K-9 Antiques" & you know I had to go in there! LOL!

We stopped by the Indian Mound Memorial...

...Hunted up a Bike Repair Shop, to help out one of our fellow riders. We lucked onto a shop named "Rooster's" & got to meet this cute little girl...

...Stopped by a Kewl Place called "Goats on the Roof" and I could have stayed there all afternoon! The Goats really have people trained there. Folks buy food & then peddle a bicycle or crank a wheel to deliver the treat cups up to the eagerly waiting Goats! They have all sorts of aerial walkways & bridges to get them from one treat location to another. I knew my Friend & Goat Lover, Jen & her Daughter Riley would get a kick out of this place!

They even had a "Reserved Parking Spot" saved for my Dear Hubs!

As we were leaving, I found this Cute Little Feller relaxing by a shady bush...

Then it was back to town...

For dinner & drinks with our friends...

...and night time Carriage Rides through town...

On our way home, we stopped off in Cherokee for some quick shopping, where I snapped this colorful guy standing on a corner.

Our trip was a short weekend jaunt, but when we went to pick the boys up from the Doggie B&B, you would have thought we had been gone for Months!

It's fun to get away, but there is still "No Place Like Home!" :)

Phil Wins Second Place!

Can you stand just one more Phil story? LOL!

I entered my Sweet Philly Boy in our local Walmart's Annual Prettiest Pet Contest this year...on a flook really, and he won Second Place! I could not be more proud!

The voting goes like this...The pet pictures are attached to jars & people "vote" w/ change & dollar bills for the one they think is the prettiest. The money goes to a Great cause...The Childrens Miracle Network. There was lot's of competition too! I was really surprised when I got the call on Tuesday..."Congratulation! Phil has won second place...you can come & pick up his pet portrait & gift certificate at any time."

I got off the phone & told Hubs...To which he smiles & says..."How much did YOU Vote?" What a Smarty Pants he is! Hmmmph! I voted 5 dollars worth, thank you very much! hehehe

Boss Still Needs Our Help...and a Home

For those of you following Boss' story, his court case was postponed yesterday. The new date is set for June 5th at 9:00 am. If you are able to attend, please do! The Woody's are asking for a show of support for Boss on his day in court.

Boss continues to heal in the Woody's care at Break the Chain Pit Bull Rescue, but they still need our help. Donations are being accepted via Paypal at this address... petpalace@charter.net ... Just put Boss' name in the notation box. Any amount, no matter the size, will be a HUGE Help with Boss' Care, Medical Bills & Attorney's fees.

Boss is now in the process of looking for a New Forever Home, where he will get the Love that he so deserves. All Dogs Go to Heaven

I was visiting Artist Robert McClintock's Fabulous Website today & while looking through his Wonderful Artwork Series called "Dogs That I Know," I came upon this particular print & my eyes teared up.

The name of the print is called "Golden-Nutmeg" but it is a face that I could have sworn was a Beautiful Old Golden Gentleman from our office that we all knew & loved as "Archie"

Though he was not "our dog" as far as ownership goes...We was "our dog" as far as a long time patient, boarder & genuine 4 legged friend to everyone he met. To know him was to love him. We recently lost our beloved Archie to old age, but he will remain in our hearts & minds until we catch a glimpse of him again someday, at the Rainbow Bridge. RIP Dear Archie Boy...I know that All Dogs Do Go to Heaven.

Chief is recovering from surgery

Our Chief had his MPL surgery on Monday, May 4th. He came through the procedure like a champ & is recovering at our hospital this week, so that we can keep an eye on him & keep him off of our steps & tile floor at home, at least until his stitches come out.

Chief is no stranger to leg problems. He came into our hospital as an emergency, with 2 injured front legs, after being hit by a truck. He was in our kennels for a long time, as his owners did not return for him, when they could not pay his hospital bill. After several attempts to contact them, and no replies, Chief was getting major kennel stress & needed a place to stay. I had no foster dog at the time & offered to take him home with me. I brought him home on Nov 1st of 2008. Within the first 2 weeks, I noticed him favoring his rear right leg, so back to the office he went for a check up. The diagnosis was a "luxating patella"... most likely another effect from being hit by the truck.

Sooooo...I quickly made the executive decision to keep Chief on as a permanent addition to our family. I knew the chances of him being adopted, while in need of a knee surgery, were pretty slim, if at all. He is a really nice boy & he has had a rough life in the past. He has a cauliflower ear...not from the truck accident, but likely from being struck in the head & he has buckshot in his body that showed up on his xrays. Despite all of this, he is a happy go lucky sort of fellow who has made a wild & crazy addition to our pack of cast offs.

Get Well Soon Chiefie-Poo! Phil & Petie are waiting for you to romp in the back yard again!

FYI: Here's a bit of info on a luxating patella...

LUXATING PATELLA (KNEE CAP)

Patellar luxation is a dislocation of the knee cap either toward the inside (medial) or outside (lateral) of the leg. The patella and its ligament normally rides in a trough or trochlear groove in the center of the leg (femur). It is one of the most common knee joint abnormalities in dogs.

Luxation may result from traumatic injury or congenital (present at birth) deformities. If the groove that the patellar ligament (knee cap) rides in is too shallow or if the distal attachment of the patellar ligament is medial instead of central, the patella will dislocate medially when the knee is bent. When this occurs, the dog (or cat) has difficulty bearing weight on the leg until the ligament snaps back into place. Sometimes only one knee is involved, but the disease can become bilateral (involving both legs) in 50% of cases.

Patellar luxation is most common in toy and miniature dog breeds, especially Poodles, Yorkshire Terriers, Pomeranians, Pekingese, Chihuahuas, Miniature Pinschers and Boston Terriers.

Clinical signs of patellar luxation vary depending upon severity and chronicity of the disease and may develop soon after birth or generally after four months of age. With mild forms of luxation, animals may occasionally pick up the affected leg when they run. As the disease progresses, animals may present with increased lameness with a decreased ability to jump. Pain is usually not associated with this condition unless it is the result of trauma or until degenerative arthritis has occurred due to chronicity of disease.

Some pets can tolerate this disease for many years, some for all of their lives, with minimal consequences. However, this weakness of the knee joint can predispose the knee and even the hip joint to other injuries such as degenerative arthritis and torn knee ligaments, both painful conditions.

Grade I -- The patella can be manually luxated but easily comes back into normal position. Patient may or may not occasionally carry the affected leg.

Grade II -- Patella luxates on flexion of the knee joint and remains out of place until manually replaced or patient extends and rotates joint. Patient intermittently carries the affected limb with the knee joint flexed.

Grade III -- Patella remains luxated most of the time but can be manually reduced (placed back into position). Flexion and extension of the knee joint reluxates the patella. Patient transfers most of the body weight to the front legs, bunny hops or carries the affected legs, and appears bowlegged or knock-kneed.

Grade IV -- Patella is permanently luxated and cannot be manually repositioned. The quadriceps muscle group starts to shorten, making it difficult to extend the leg fully. Patient transfers most of the body weight to the front legs, bunny hops or carries the affected legs, and appears bowlegged or knock-kneed.

Treatment is based upon severity of signs and your pet’s age, breed and weight. Conservative therapy is often chosen in the early stages of the condition. However, if the patellar luxation is a grade III, your pet has persistent lameness, or other knee injuries occur secondary to the luxation, then surgery is the best option for your pet. Even with conservative medical therapy, your pet is at increased risk for torn ligaments in the knee and the condition can worsen over time, leading to degenerative joint disease which is a permanent and painful condition. If the surgery is performed before arthritis occurs, the prognosis is excellent and your pet should retain full use of his leg.

Your dog should have the bandage and stitches removed at 10 to 14 days following surgery and have strict rest for four to six weeks. This would require, in most cases, confinement to a single room, no going up or down stairs, avoiding slippery surfaces such as tile, hardwood floors or linoleum, and leash walk for bathroom duty only.

Wish us luck on keeping this active boy still for 6 weeks! YIKES! :)

Justice For Boss

KNOXVILLE — The wounds on "Boss" the pit bull hurt Leslie and James Woody, the owners of Break The Chain Pit Bull Rescue. The rescue travels all over the United States to find pit bulls a good home. That is exactly what they thought they did for Boss.

"We have home checks and vet checks," said Leslie Woody.

"We do work history checks and background checks for domestic violence," James Woody said.

All of those checks cleared a McMinn County man to adopt Boss in March.

The red flag didn't show until Boss missed two of his vet visits.

Three and a half weeks later after the adoption the Woody's wanted answers from the owner.

"He told us that Boss had an accident. We demanded to see him on Monday," Leslie Woody said.

"When I saw him I was speechless," James Woody said of his reaction this Monday.

The dog rescue said the owner first told them a tale.

"...that he was driving down the road and Boss did jump out of the window and then he took him to the vet," said Leslie Woody.

Then the rescue said the owner told the truth.

"He was tied to the back bumper of the truck. He was forgot about. He [the owner] got a phone call. He just backed over him and took off down the driveway and down the road," said Leslie Woody.

The Woody's believe Boss was dragged one mile and that the owner never took him to a veterinarian.

It was nearly 18 days later before the rescue learned of Boss' injuries. The Woody's rushed Boss to the Lenoir City Animal Clinic.

"He is on some antibiotics now, and the plan is to let the other small wounds scar in," said Dr. Tom Bradbury, a veterinarian at LCAC.

Bradbury will perform surgery on Boss next week to cover the larger wounds. The veterinarian does believe that Boss was dragged.

The Woody's plan to file a police report on the owner. They said their strict adoption checks will now be more tough.

Therapy dogs and their handlers offer a calming presence and a break from routine, social interaction. For patients in a nursing home or hospital, they can make the day a little bit brighter.

According to Therapy Dogs International, a group that evaluates and certifies therapy dogs, any breed is eligible to be certified. What matters most is the dog's training and temperament.

No dog is a better example of this statement than Hector.

Hector, who is owned by Andrew Yori of Rochester, was recently certified as a therapy dog by TDI. He is a 4-year-old pit bull who spent the first part of his life as part of Michael Vick's dog-fighting operation in Virginia. Rescued in 2007, Hector moved to Rochester in June of last year.

Hector still bears scars from his fights, but he has settled happily into his new peaceful life.

"He's a big goofy dog," Yori said.

Pit bulls are a very resilient breed.

"Not a lot of dogs could go through what he did and still come out OK," Yori said.

Hector's attitude seems to be, "It's behind me, let's go forward and have a good time."

Hector's journey to becoming a therapy dog began with simple obedience training -- learning to sit, stay and show other good manners -- and passing the AKC's Canine Good Citizen test. Working to become a therapy dog seemed like a natural next step for Hector.

"He really enjoys anybody who will give him some attention," Yori said. "Nothing seems to phase him too much, so it seemed like a really good fit. And because of where he came from, it would really shatter a lot of stereotypes."

In order to be certified, each dog and handler team must pass a rigorous, 15-part exam.

"We try to mimic what some of the encounters might be like," said Marcia Fritzmeier, a TDI evaluator who administered Hector and Yori's test. TDI's exam tests each dog's manners, obedience, ease around people and reactions to situations such as loud noises and meeting other dogs.

Fritzmeier was aware of Hector's background before his test and paid special attention to his temperament, extending some of the tests to be sure Hector would be a good therapy dog.

"I could not believe the degree of excellence he passed this test with," she said. "He never stopped wagging his tail. He just enjoyed every second of it."

Once the paperwork is processed in a few weeks, Hector and Yori will begin making visits to nursing homes. Yori says bringing a bit of joy to another dog lover is the best part of the job.

"You really see the people who had dogs and love dogs, their eyes just light up," he said.

Miami’s Pit bull Ban Takes a Hit

Breed specific legislation against pit bulls took another much deserved hit last week when a Dade County court ruled that Miami’s pit bull ban is too vague to be used as grounds for euthanizing animals.

The county ban applied to all dogs that “substantially conform” to American Kennel Club standards for American Staffordshire Terriers or Staffordshire Bull Terriers, or United Kennel Club standards for American Pit Bull Terriers.

To determine if a dog conformed to the standards, the animal control department used a chart that lists 15 body parts, such as head, neck, lips, chest, eyes, tail and hind legs. Officers check off which characteristics of a dog conform to a pit bull. If three or more characteristics are checked, the dog is declared a pit bull.

The court ruling came in a case challenging the finding by Miami-Dade County Animal Control that a family pet named Apollo was a “pit bull” that must be removed from the county or euthanized.

Rima Bardawil, the attorney for Apollo, pointed out that the ordinance makes no mention of any chart or checklist, and that it is not clear what standards animal control is using in making its determinations or how valid they are.

Dahlia Canes, executive director of Miami Coalition Against Breed Specific Legislation, testified that animal control is “constantly” misidentifying the breeds of dogs. She told the court about one dog that was declared by an animal control officer to be a pit bull mix and ordered euthanized. Canes arranged to have the dog re-evaluated and he was determined to be a mastiff mix. The dog was then adopted to a family in Miami-Dade County.

In the case of Apollo, the animal control officer photographed the dog from several feet away, then used the photo to pick three body parts he said he thought conformed to pit bull standards.

It makes one wonder — how many of the dogs described by police, and characterized in headlines, as pit bulls really are of the breeds that fall under that catch-all term?

Today is my Birthday. They are coming faster & Faster & FASTER! LOL! We also celebrate Phil's birthday along with mine. The place... errr...pig sty...he came from is down the road from my home a little ways. I saw him when they first got him as a tiny puppy, so we can sort of "guesstimate" that he was born in March sometime...4 Years ago.

I got (took) Philly when he was about 7 or 8 months old & knocking on deaths door. He was such a sick & emaciated pup & his "owners" were just going to let him die, like the other dog they had let die the week before. It looked like he had parvo from the symptoms, but Thankfully No...it was Coronavirus instead, which has the same symptoms. You can only imagine the shape he was in. I really only expected to pay to have him humanely put to sleep & end his misery, poor boy. But...after 3 days of Excellent Care & IV fluids at my Vets office...he made a Miraculous Recovery! I got to bring him home to finish nursing him back to health & here he is today! My beautiful Philly Boy...Happy & Healthy. Happy Birthday Buddy! I hope to celebrate lot's more birthdays together.

Oh yeah...the Wonderful Vets who saved my Phil...well...they are now my Bosses! LOL!

Where has the Time Gone?

Holy Moly! It's been a month & a half since I last posted. Where is the time getting to? It's been crazy around here lately. I've been working my day job & my night job & my dog job & then we started another house project...Calgon...Take me away! hehehe

I was asked to do some Early Style Horses for our Beloved Smoky Mountain Darling, Miss Dolly herself. What an HONOR! I was sooo nervous, wanting to get them just right & they were such a simple request, but then, I am a Worry Wart from waaaaay back!

Here is what I delivered for Miss Dolly...

I received word that another horse was needed, but in a larger size & different color, so I am working on that order right now. Who knows...maybe I'll get to meet Miss Dolly in person some day!?! I have that wish on my "Bucket List". :)

I Rescued A Human Today

This touching story came to me in an email today. It brought a tear to my eyes...

I rescued a human today.

Her eyes met mine as she walked down the corridor peering apprehensively into the kennels. I felt her need instantly and knew I had to help her. I wagged my tail, not too exuberantly, so she wouldn't be afraid.

As she stopped at my kennel I blocked her view from a little accident I had in the back of my cage. I didn't want her to know that I hadn't been walked today. Sometimes the shelter keepers get too busy and I didn't want her to think poorly of them.

As she read my kennel card I hoped that she wouldn't feel sad about my past. I only have the future to look forward to and want to make a difference in someone's life. She got down on her knees and made little kissy sounds at me.

I shoved my shoulder and side of my head up against the bars to comfort her.

Gentle fingertips caressed my neck; she was desperate for companionship. A tear fell down her cheek and I raised my paw to assure her that all would be well.

Soon my kennel door opened and her smile was so bright that I instantly jumped into her arms. I would promise to keep her safe. I would promise to always be by her side. I would promise to do everything I could to see that radiant smile and sparkle in her eyes. I was so fortunate that she came down my corridor. So many more are out there who haven't walked the corridors. So many more to be saved. At least I could save one.

A Sweet Surprise from one of Santa's Elves

I am a bit late at posting this, but I did not want my Dear Friend to think her kindness was unappreciated. Far from it! I received the most Wonderful Surprise Package from my Dear Friend Cookie on a day when I could really use a hug. How did she know? She must be one of Santa's most Special Elves...

I could smell the goodies as soon as I opened the box! Here is the first gift I pulled from the package...

One of Cookies Fabulous STICK REINDEER! Oh My Goodness! I gasped when I saw him. He is So Awesome & he smells so good...I sniff him every time I walk past him! LOL!

Oh, but that's not all! See that Beautiful Santa Ornie in the pic? That's from Cookie too! His beard is made of curled oak strips. I Love Him!

I dug further into the Bottomless Gift Box...What was that smell? It was sooooo wonderful...Then I found it! A Gift Set from Bath & Body Works in one of my Fave Holiday Scents from them...Winter Candy Apple. AND...A set of Adorable Ornies that Cookie made from Tree Pods. They look like Snow Babies. Aren't they just the Cutest?

There was also a Lovely Card & a Beautiful Photo of Cookie & her Dear Hubs on one of their Great Biker Escapes. Thank You from the bottom of my heart, Buddy! I Love Everything, but most of all...I love You! :)

A Shelter Dogs Christmas Poem

This poem was sent to me in an email today. I wanted to share it with you all.

Tis the night before Christmas and all through the town,
every shelter is full – we are lost, but not found,

Our numbers are hung on our kennels so bare,
we hope every minute that someone will care,

They'll come to adopt us and give us the call,
"Come here, Max and Sparkie - come fetch your new ball!!

But now we sit here and think of the days..
we were treated so fondly - we had cute, baby ways,

Once we were little, then we grew and we grew
now we're no longer young and we're no longer new.

So out the back door we were thrown like the trash,
they reacted so quickly – why were they so rash?

We "jump on the children:, "don't come when they call",
we "bark when they leave us", climb over the wall.

We should have been neutered, we should have been spayed,
now we suffer the consequence of the errors THEY made.

If only they'd trained us, if only we knew...
we'd have done what they asked us and worshiped them, too.

We were left in the backyard, or worse -let to roam-
now we're tired and lonely and out of a home.

They dropped us off here and they kissed us good-bye...
"Maybe someone else will give you a try."

So now here we are, all confused and alone...
in a shelter with others who long for a home.

The kind workers come through with a meal and a pat,
with so many to care for, they can't stay to chat,

They move to the next kennel, giving each of us cheer...
we know that they wonder how long we'll be here.

We lay down to sleep and sweet dreams fill our heads..
of a home filled with love and our own cozy beds.

Then we wake to see sad eyes, brimming with tears –
our friends filled with emptiness, worry, and fear.

If you can't adopt us and there's no room at the Inn –
could you help with the bills and fill our food bin?

We count on your kindness each day of the year –
can you give more than hope to everyone here?

Please make a donation to pay for the heat...
and help get us something special to eat.

Whoo! It's getting here so quickly! I think this is the first year that I am totally unprepaired for Christmas. With extra work, an extra dog & a sick dog...I have almost let the Holiday Season pass me right by.

I did finally get my tree up though, so there WILL be Christmas at my house, but I have not made candy or "decked the halls" or even watched "A Christmas Story" which is my very fave holiday movie of all time.

Sooo...as Christmas draws ever closer, I would like to wish all of my Friends & Valued Customers a Very Merry Christmas and a Blessed New Year! I'll see you in the New Year! Enough is Enough...

Tomorrow will be 1 week since Phil's strange sores cropped up. We still don't know what it is. He had a biopsy yesterday, but we won't get the results back until after Christmas, most likely. The vet tells me not to worry, he feels sure it is some sort of allergic reaction, but for the life of me, I have not changed anything in my house. I want it to stop. Phil has suffered so much & enough is enough allready! This is what Phil looked like last night after his biopsy...

Yesterday, I picked up our Sunday Paper & was both surprised & delighted to see our Youngest Grandson Reece in a color photo on the Front Page! He does not consider Santa a BFF, but he sure made buddies with Duke.

An Update & a Thank You..

I wanted to give a quick Update on my Phil. He is not out of the woods yet. He went in on Saturday & the Vet ran a CBC which came back normal & two Xrays which showed his spleen & other organs as normal but with some congestion in his lungs. He was given 2 injections & 2 scripts. I have to take him back in the morning for biopsies of the awful bleeding sores that are still afflictling my boy & worrying the life out of me & his doctors.

Just in case he's developed a food allergy, Phil is eating chicken breast & rice. He really likes this meal! :) It's good to see him eat & not vomit.

Even Chief has been worried about Phil & has stayed close by his side, but very still, so not to disturb Phil while he is resting.

I would like to give a Big Heartfelt THANK YOU for all of the Kind thoughts, Prayers & Emails asking about my Philly. I will keep updating, hopefully with Good News Soon. Thanks so much!

One Sick Puppy....

Oh Dear! My Beautiful Philly Boy is Sick! He was fine when I went to bed on Wednesday morning around 1:30 am. He & Chief were snoozing on the couch & when I turned out the lights, Phil followed me to my room, but decided to sleep in his own bed, instead of on mine. No probs...he does this sometimes, so off we go to ZZZZZZZZ land.

Well, I wake up around 5:30 am & Phil is in bed w/ me, but he's shivering, so I cover him up & snooze until the alarm goes off at 6:00 am. When we get up, I notice 3 or 4 large whelps on Philly's back. Hmmm...something must have bit him? I wonder...he has such fair & sensitive skin, the least abrasion makes a place on him, so I go on about getting ready for work. I come out of the kitchen & get the shock of my life!

Within 15 minutes time, my Philly boy is broken out in horrible bumps on top of bumps all over his head, muzzle, neck, legs, toes...his whole body! And some of them are starting to bleed!

I am feeling pretty sure it is a bite or allergic reaction...Could he be allergic to Chief? Hubs asks...Trying to lighten my worry w/ a joke...(Not the time for corny jokes hun...I'm Freaking Out here)

Soooo...off to work with me he goes...Vet says just as I had thought...probably a bite, but not too serious...he gives him a big dose of benedryl & the bleeding stops & the bumps seem to lessen, or at least stop forming more...We feel this is going to do the trick.

At home that night...the bumps come back with a vengeance! Again within 15 minutes, Phil is broken out worse than ever & bleeding again.

So...today he is still broken out awful, but now on an antibiotic & a steroid. We are hoping this will take care of his hives, poor baby. If not, it's back to the Vet tomorrow... And... I did kill a large brown spider in my bedroom this morning when I was getting ready for work. Still don't know if that's what it is, but Phil is not sleeping in his bed for the time being, just in case!

Thanks so much for all of your kind words & emails, checking on my Philly Boy. I appreciate everyone's concern for my buddy. I hope he is back to his Beautiful Bully self SOON!

Christmas at Dollywood

My Hubs Company Christmas Gathering was at Dollywood this year. I always love to go & see the lights there...Just Beautiful! But Boy Oh Boy was it COLD! I had on every polar fleece top & long underwear I could find. hehe

Our Youngest Son Brad works at the same plant, so his family was there too!

Our 2 year old Grandson Reece had a blast & was really into the Reindeer & Elf displays...LOL!

Bringing My "Work" Home with me...

Wow...it's been a while since my last post! A lot has been happening around here. I work part time at a Vet's Office & now have a New Family Member, adopted from our office.

Meet Chief...

He was brought in with injuries to his front legs after being hit by a truck & was abandoned by his owners at our office. After a month in our kennel run & no contact from his owners, our Very Kind Vet allowed me to take him home to "foster" (instead of sending him to the shelter) until I could get him into a rescue.

Well, after being at my home for a week, I noticed a limp in one of his back legs & took him back in for a recheck with one of our Dr's....Just my luck...he has a knee that pops out of place & will need surgery. Wow...poor guy has 3 messed up legs! I took a deep breath & blurted out..."I'm Keeping Him then!"..."after I talk to my husband that is..."

Well, as you can see...Hubs was easy to convince that Chief should stay on with us. We both knew that the chances of getting him a home, or even into a rescue w/ a bum knee, would be down right impossible. His future would be bleak at best.

Chief is a funny fellow. He likes to play & he loves to sleep on the couch...on his back. LOL! He is a comedy show on 4 clumsy legs.

I guess you could say that we have officially "Gone to the Dogs" around here. I didn't plan on another dog, but none of the others were planned either & I don't know what I would do with out them. Sometimes things just work out that way I reckon. Welcome to the Family Chiefie-Poo!

A Kewl Old Glass Candy Jar, Old Spice Tins & Measuring Spoons (that will likely end up in a Festive Gingerbread Grouping for Rebecca's Thyme Holiday Open House) and a couple of Old Beehive Bobbins. The Super Neat Red Scale that my Hubs bought after I mentioned I liked it. It is most likely a Reproduction, but I just Love It anyways!

Old Tin Picnic Containers in my Fave Colors of Red & Green. A set of Old Tin Candle Sticks. A couple of Old Funnels. The Awesome Red one with the Handle was a Gift! From my Friends Clay & Barbie, who I met through Rebecca's Summer Open House. They were set up selling their Beautiful assortment of Primitive Antiques & had saved this Fab Red Funnel for me. Only a few more days with "Miss P"...our nickname for Little Miss Pandora. She will go in Monday for her last check up & Health Certification and then board the bus bound for Jacksonville this Friday afternoon.

We have really enjoyed her stay with us. She is a Great Little Dog with such a laid back personality. I know she will be just the Perfect Girl for a Family with Kids & other dogs.

A Day Trip to Henderson, NC

With all my dogs to tend to, you can imagine that vacations around here tend to be "Day Trips". One of my favorite places to visit is Henderson, NC. That area is full of neat little shops & Antique stores that line the country road that leads back to Asheville. My fave store to visit in Henderson...

This year I noticed something new! In front of many of the stores they had colorful Goats...all theme painted with brass plates telling their stories. I had seen these in other towns...Horses in Lexington, KY, Bears in Gatlinburg & Cherokee, NC...Here is the Mast General Store's Goat. He is called "The Goat of Many Colors" and is painted in a lovely patchwork design.

Another favorite Goat was in front of an Ice Cream Shop with a friend, who loved Ice Cream too!

Then there was this one that caught my eye...

I had to have my picture taken with this one...I'm such a sucker for a guy named "Phil"...LOL!

New Girl on the Hill... Meet Pandora

Before Nala even left us, the shelter was calling about another little brindle girl in need of a place to stay..."Pandora is her name...Will you take her?" I only foster one dog at a time, as I have 3 of my own. That is my limit. On Thursday I stopped by to get a peek at her...There she was, in an outdoor enclosure with another dog, rightfully named, "Crazy Millie" LOL! Pandora was sooo layed back & having been in with Crazy Millie for 3 weeks hadn't seemed to rub off on her, so...Yes, you know it...She came home with me.

She is just the friendliest little girl. She loves people & other dogs. Here she is with foster bro Phil.

Ain't No Sunshine When She's Gone...

If you've wondered where I've been...I have been fostering a little female pit bull pup for the last month and a half. She was taken in an emergency cruelty situation on the 1st of July. With the Holiday Weekend upon us, I told them to bring her to me, as there was no way to get her into a shelter or rescue for several days. She arrived around 2 in the morning...Of course when I saw her, I immediately fell in love with this little Imp...Nala is her name.

Nala had some problems, caused by her owner's neglect. Sadly, her owner cared a lot more about drugs than Nala. She was left alone for many months, locked in a small trailer bathroom with no air, or even an open window, in the sweltering heat of the summer. She was fed whenever the owner remembered to stop by...usually once a week, never more than that...sometimes less. She had to lie in her own waste & her water source was from a bathtub faucet that thankfully leaked very badly.

We had Miss Nala spayed, given all her shots, de-wormed, heart worm tested & treated for a mild case of demodex, that the vet said was probably brought on by the stress from the heat, her poor care, poor hygene & nutrition. During all this, she has just been the sweetest little girl. Everything was so new to her...like she was seeing toys, playing, running...all for the very first time. She was Free! Free from her bathroom prison. Here she is playing "Turtle Tug" with Petie & Phil. Hillarious to watch!

I am Happy to report that Nala has gone to her forever home with a delightful little girl named Trish! While we miss her terribly here, that is part of the heart ache of foster care...to love them & then let them go, we know that she will have a Great Life with her new girl in Delaware. AND...we will get to see her again next summer when Trish comes back to visit her Grandmom for the summer. Thanks Trish, for opening your heart to Nala! My very best wishes to you both.

My hubs works for one of THE Best Companies in the country! Bush Brothers Company just celebrated it's 100 year Aniversary & it's no wonder this company has been successful for so long. They treat their People & their Community like Family...not to mention they have the Best Bean Products & of Course...Jay, Duke & Cousin Drew in their corner!

In June the Annual Honda Hoot converges on Knoxville. Bush Bros. hosted a ride & tour complete with a big catered lunch, tours of the Chesnut Hill Plant, Goody Bags & a Meet & Greet with Jay, Duke & Cousin Drew. Hubs was not able to ride, but we were invited to come anyways & we were glad we did. Bush Bros. knows how to put on an event, let me tell ya!

Duke is still keeping the "Secret Recipe" under wraps...

Here's what I saw when I opened the large, heavy box...A Lovely Stitchery Bone..."No house is complete without the pitter patter of puppy feet"... Words to live by at my house! LOL!

Then...There were two Kewl Star Fixins Pans & Old Wooden bowl...in the colors of my walls! (And I collect Stars too) I couldn't believe the Beautiful Spool Lamp (w/ Rusty Star detailing) LOVE It! The Vintage Berry Basket & Strawberry Coasters. Vintage Tater Mashers...Not One, but TWO! Stacking Boxes that held Jingle Pumpkins & Winter Scrapbooking Finds! Two Tin Star Trays. A Round Tin w/ More Jingle Pumpkins...

Oh I'm not done yet! There were many Fabrics...Reds, Navy, Green & Flag Print too! A Gorgeous Patriotic Folk Art Dish & a Christmas Tree. I know I have left out something... I can't say "Thanks" enough! Jamie, you are such a Sweet Heart. I LOVE Everything!

My Dear Hub... We got Good News!

On April 9th, the day before my Dear Hubs 47th Birthday, we got some very disturbing news. After months of tests and hearing, "Oh, I'm sure it's nothing, but lets check" and "Oh, I am sure it's just an infection, but just to be sure, let's do a biopsy" ...We got the word. "Yes, it's Cancer"..."Yes, it's very aggressive"..."No, we can't wait until Fall to do your surgery".... We were, to say the least, very shocked & scared.

Hubs went in for surgery on May 12th and had his prostate removed along with 2 lymph nodes. Since he had had an appendectomy at the age of 18, he was not a candidate for the laser surgery, so he had to do the regular surgery.

He has been a model patient & is healing nicely. Thanks so very much to everyone who has written the wonderful emails & sent their good wishes, thoughts & prayers. They were & are ALL Apreciated!

So....Drum Roll Please....

We got his Pathology Report back this week & though the prosate was totally involved & very close to the margins, the surgery was successful! The lymph nodes were clear & he will not have to have chemo or radiation. We are so very Happy & Thankful!

Our 29th Anniversary is coming up on June 7th. We are looking forward to a least another 29 more to come! :)

OK...I have been tagged by the Lovely & Talented Jamie of "Peach Street Primitives" to tell 5 things about myself...Oh dear...I'm just not that interesting! LOL! OK...here goes...

#1 I am a Hopeless Hoarder. I work best in my messy workplace. When I tidy things up, I can't ever find a thing I am looking for! Yes, there is a method to my madness! LOL!

#2 I am a Tomboy. I can't walk in heels. I feel stupid in a dress. I wear motorcycle boots or flip flops year round & always, always Jeans. Put me outside cutting grass or dragging brush & I'm a Happy Gal!

#3 I am Very Shy. I like working at home. I have lot's of friends & make friends easily, but I am most comfortable & at ease working from home, with my dogs, who seem to understand (or maybe the word is tolerate?) my quirks best.

#4 I am a Cancer Survivor... 9 years now!

#5 I hope someday to take a motorcycle trip to the Grand Canyon & other sites I have read about on Ara & Spirit's Blog. I think that would be a sight to see & extra fun on a bike. I would love to meet up with my TDIPT Sisters & Friends I have met online, along the way!

We stopped to visit the kids after my Birthday a couple of weeks ago. My Hubs had gotten me a new camera & I was showing it to my DIL, hoping for some pointers on how to use it. I had to laugh, because Grand-dog Apollo was sitting beside me on the couch & Reece was across the room playing. When the camera came out of the case it was like a light went off....A "Cheeeeze" Light! LOL! Reece came running with a Huge Grin for the camera... and Apollo immediately "Struck a Pose" on the arm of the couch...LOL! Can you say....H-A-M-S?

The Police Dept hosted an Easter Egg Hunt at an area Park for the kiddies. It was a Beautiful Day & there were tons of families out enjoying the fun! Here are our Cute Grandsons... Wyatt on the left & Reece on the right.

I've had quite a few folks email me to say they missed Rachel Ray's show & really wanted to see it. Donna Reynolds of Bad Rap was kind enough to share the link to the story from their site. There you will see some background on the dogs painful journey... from Hell ...to Now. One of my favorite rescued dogs... Jonny Justice is featured hamming it up with Donna & Rachel Ray. Someone asked Donna why Rachel requested quiet in the studio & no applause...Was Jonny nervous? No...Donna replied. He is such a people lover, he just wanted to play & meet all the new people smiling at him from the audience! If the people had clapped, he would have thought they all wanted to play, so everyone was quiet to keep him focused. LOL! Pibble Power...there's nothing like it! :) A Huge Thank-You to the folks at Bad Rap for standing up to the Humane Society & fighting to save Jonny, Hector & all the other Vick dogs, who so desperately deserved a chance at life. I had been counting down the days for this show & today it was finally here. I've always loved Rachel Ray, but today's show was especially close to my heart. The Wonderful people from Bad Rap were going to be on the show w/ one of the 10 Michael Vick dogs they have in their care. Which one would it be? They are all so adorable...I hoped it might be one of my personal faves...Jonny Justice or perhaps Hector...Well...was I in for a treat! Bad Rap CoFounder Donna Reynolds was on with none other than Jonny! What a handsome boy he is.
